This cafe is found along one of the streets of ‘Seoul’s Brooklyn’ as it is termed these days. A neighborhood that used to be home to the shoe making industry is now crammed with restaurants and trendy shops.
A large gate into a courtyard leads to Grandpas Factory Cafe. I’m assuming this used to be a factory owned by… Grandpa. Now it is a large, high ceilinged space with a lot of wood, glass and arty stuff adorning every corner. Grandpa would find it a nightmare to dust.
We arrived just as it was opening on a weekday, so it wasn't busy. The cafe serves food such as wood fired pizza, pasta and salads and the prep for this was taking place in the open kitchen area. We ordered coffee and cheesecake from a small selection.
The coffee was okay, and the cheesecake was pretty amazing, but it was more expensive than most cafes I’ve been to in Seoul. Maybe Grandpa is getting a kickback.
I’m not generally a fan of industrial type spaces as I feel they lack warmth and the noise level is often too great for me. However I can see the cafe is very well designed, and has a stepped seating area, a large upstairs, and outdoor seating which would be perfect in the warmer months.
The courtyard gives a slightly European feel to the cafe, and, as most cafes in Seoul, its instagrammable.
My son was captivated by the treehouse that sits precariously outside the first floor, and spent a while seated in there admiring the view.
Although we did not eat a meal here, the food being served looked fantastic so is worth a try if you are in the neighborhood, or in dire need of an overpriced coffee.
